When someone brings a machine into CCPCREPAIR in Tahlequah and says “it got slow,” we almost never find a single magical setting. Performance collapses for a handful of common reasons. Sorting them in a safe order saves money and avoids the worst DIY mistake: downloading a free booster tool that is itself adware.
1. Check free disk space first
Windows and browsers need free space for updates, virtual memory, and temporary files. If the system drive (usually C:) is under roughly 10-15% free, everything feels sticky: opens take longer, updates fail, and search indexes thrash.
- Open File Explorer → This PC and look at the free space bar on C:.
- Empty Recycle Bin and Downloads of installers you no longer need.
- Move large video libraries to an external drive if the internal disk is small.
- Avoid aggressive “cleaner” suites; Windows Disk Cleanup or Storage settings are enough for a first pass.
Shop note: A nearly full drive is often paired with a worn hard disk. If the PC is more than a few years old and still on a spinning HDD, an SSD upgrade is one of the highest-impact repairs we do - after we confirm the disk is healthy enough to clone.
2. Startup programs and browser load
Every chat app, updater, and RGB utility that launches at login steals CPU and disk for the first minutes you care about most. Chromium browsers with dozens of extensions do the same once you open the web.
- Task Manager → Startup apps: disable what you do not need at boot (you can still open those apps later).
- In your browser, disable extensions you do not recognize; test with a fresh profile if needed.
- Note whether slowness is only right after login or all day - that split already guides the repair.
3. Heat and dust
Laptops that roar and still throttle are often packed with dust. CPUs and GPUs slow themselves on purpose when temperatures climb. If the machine is hot to the touch, fans are maxed, or performance dies only under load (video calls, games, photo edits), thermal paste and a proper cleaning may be the real fix - not more RAM.
Do not pour compressed air into a running fan at full blast until it spins freely the wrong way for long; hold the fan still if you can see it. If you are not comfortable opening the chassis, that is normal bench work for us.
4. Failing storage and memory
A dying HDD or SSD makes the system pause randomly, especially when opening files or waking from sleep. Bad RAM can cause freezes and app crashes that feel like “Windows is just old.”
- Listen for repetitive clicking from older hard drives - power down and seek help if you hear it; that is a data-risk situation.
- Check Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer for disk and memory errors if you are comfortable there.
- Do not run endless surface scans on a clicking drive; prioritize copying important files off first if the system still boots.
5. Malware and unwanted software
Not every slow PC is infected, but infections still show up: browser redirects, unexpected toolbars, crypto-miner CPU use, and fake “your PC is infected” full-screen alerts. Use reputable scanners (Windows Security is a valid start) and avoid calling the numbers on pop-up scareware. More detail is in our malware signs guide.
6. When to stop DIY and book a diagnostic
Book a diagnostic if the PC freezes hard, the disk may be failing, you cannot log in, ransomware is involved, or you need the machine stable for work or school on a deadline.
