2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz (and 6 GHz)
2.4 GHz travels farther and through walls better but is crowded and slower. 5 GHz (and 6 GHz where available) is faster near the radio and dies sooner through obstacles. A phone that “has bars” on 5 GHz in the bedroom may be hanging on by a thread. Band steering on modern systems tries to choose for you; older devices may need the SSID that actually works in that room.
Extenders vs mesh vs wired access points
Cheap single-band extenders often create a second network name and cut throughput in half. Mesh systems are better when nodes can hear each other cleanly. The gold standard for stubborn houses is a wired backhaul: Ethernet (or MoCA on coax where it fits) to an access point in the dead wing of the house. Interference and channel chaos
Apartment-style density and neighbor networks can saturate 2.4 GHz. Sometimes a channel change or separating IoT devices onto 2.4 while laptops stay on 5 GHz is enough. Double routers (ISP gateway + a second router still in router mode) create double-NAT and weird drops that look like “bad Wi‑Fi” but are a topology problem.
When to call the shop
Call when you have tried placement, still have whole-house issues, need guest isolation, run small-business gear, or want a documented layout instead of another mystery box.
