Boot failures are stressful because the machine holds mail, homework, tax PDFs, and photos. The goal of this guide is a safe order of checks that does not destroy remaining data. If you smell burnt electronics or see liquid damage, unplug and book a bench diagnostic instead of power-cycling for an hour.

Category A - no lights, no fans

  • Confirm the outlet works with a lamp or phone charger.
  • For desktops: check the PSU rear switch and the cable at both ends. Try a known-good cable if you have one.
  • For laptops: try the charger LED (if any), a different outlet, and leave it on the charger for 15-20 minutes in case the battery management IC is in a protection state.
  • Remove non-essential USB devices (external drives, docks) that can confuse power negotiation.

If there is still no sign of life, stop. Further board-level work needs meters and experience; random button-holding myths rarely resurrect a dead power rail.

Category B - fans spin, no display

Power is present but the image path or POST is failing. Try an external monitor on a laptop, reseat the video cable on a desktop if you know how, and clear a single known-good stick of RAM only if you are comfortable opening the case. Do not mix random spare parts from a junk drawer “to see.” Wrong voltage RAM or GPUs create new problems.

Category C - logo or BIOS, then failure

You may see a manufacturer logo, a spinning dots animation, or a blue recovery screen. Note the exact stop code (for example, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) and whether the failure started after an update, a power outage, or a full disk. Automatic Repair loops often point at boot configuration, disk health, or a broken update - not “Windows is expired.”

  • If Windows offers Safe Mode and you can reach it, back up files to external storage before deeper repair attempts.
  • Avoid formatting prompts you do not fully understand; format is rarely the first tool we use on the bench when data matters.
  • Clicking hard drives should not be “tested harder” with more boot attempts.
